Profile (English)

Biography

Barbara Schmitz studied Theology at Passau, Jerusalem, and Münster. She completed her doctorate on the book of Judith in 2004 at the University of Münster. She has held positions as researcher and lecturer in Old Testament at Bamberg (2000-2004) and Fribourg/CH (2004-2005), and as Senior Lecturer at Duisburg-Essen (2005-2009). Having completed her habilitation on narratology and the books of Kings in 2008, she was appointed full professor at the Technical University of Dortmund in 2010. She took up an appointment as Professor of Old Testament at the University of Würzburg in 2011.

Research

Barbara Schmitz' research focuses on Jewish literature of the Second Temple Period (especially Judith, Esther, 1/2 Maccabees and Aristeas), combining insights from narratology with historical approaches. She has written a commentary on the Book of Judith (Herders Theologischer Kommentar) and is currently working on commentaries on Susanna (SBL Commentary on the Septuagint) and Judith (IECOT/IEKAT). She is PI of the project Self-Organisation and Horizontal Binding Forces: Local Authorities in Ancient Judaism from the 6th Century BC to the 1st Century AD, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), and was PI of the project Local Self-governance in Judea in the second century BCE: Historical and Literary Perspectives from 2019-2023.
